There are several reasons for a water dispenser in a refrigerator to not work. Again, some reasons could sound a little strange. However, something as obvious as an off switch on the refrigerator has been the reason in some instances. Be sure to review the obvious potential problems prior to proceeding with refrigerator repair. Let’s begin to cover this appliance repair problem and see all of the causes we can reference for a broken water dispenser.

The cause of a water dispenser not dispensing is typically an installation problem, a filter issue or frozen water lines:

New Refrigerator Installation Problems

You just purchased a brand new refrigerator with a water dispenser, but it is not dispensing water. The water dispenser has to be connected to the water line. That could be the cause of the problem.

If your brand new refrigerator is replacing a previous refrigerator that didn’t include an ice maker or water dispenser, there’s a possibility that you do not have a functioning water line near this area of the kitchen. Most of the time a water line is typically run from underneath a home either in a basement or crawl space. You can get this line at nearly any hardware store and they are very easy for the typical homeowner to install. Usually they have come with a water shut-off valve, which is important so that if you need to move the refrigerator, you can shut off the water.

If you have an attached water line, is the valve turned on? The valve handle needs to be in line with the hose. And, is there water going through the pipe that you have installed to connect the water line? Obvious and common questions, but things that have to be accounted for.

If you removed the refrigerator doors during installation the water dispenser may not be plugged in. Check the owner’s manual to find the wire harness for the particular refrigerator. Check that it’s plugged into the refrigerator.

If the water line is hooked up, most of the time there’s air in the line. So, lifting and lowering the water dispenser lever on the refrigerator to get the air out of it is needed.
Filter Issues

On some popular refrigerators, there are different filters. These filters could “expire”, become clogged or become frozen. All of the filters are dependent on your style and brand of refrigerator. If the filter is blocked it will cause slow filling or no flowing period. It’s recommended that your filter is replaced every 6 months. Replacing filters in a refrigerator can be difficult. If you have hiccups, go online and learn the proper process to replace a filter.

One idea is to fill the filter with water before installing it. A lot of time the water filters need a long time to fill up, which might lead you to assume the water dispenser on the refrigerator isn’t working right. You will want to read the directions if nothing is working. To ensure it’s not air trapped in the water lines, depress the dispenser lever for around 5 minutes.

A frozen water tank could be the source of the issue as well on some refrigerators. If the tank is frozen it will start to leak onto the food bins. Small amounts of food in the fresh food bins could cause freezing to occur.
